Mountain caribou are one of the most critically endangered animals in North America, relying entirely on old-growth forest in the world’s only Inland Temperate Rainforest. Thanks to support from people around the world, in February 2009, the BC government legislated a recovery plan for caribou that protects habitat for caribou. But it comes at a price. The government must still come through on IOUs for caribou, including closing mountain caribou habitat to winter motorized recreation and boosting the dangerously low numbers of caribou by transplanting animals from healthier populations.
